So when a customer contacted us after experiencing his second basket failure, we knew something wasn't adding up.

The Customer's Complaint

The customer had installed a replacement stainless steel basket in a Perko 0493 sea strainer. After only a short period of service, he removed it and discovered several large holes burned completely through the stainless steel.

In all that time, we've only seen a handful of failures that looked like this.

That immediately suggested the basket itself probably wasn't the problem.

Failures like this are almost always caused by something happening inside the boat, not inside the manufacturing process.

We Asked AI for a Second Opinion

Rather than relying only on our own experience, we uploaded the customer's photo into our AI analysis system.

The AI examined the image and reached nearly the same conclusion we had.

It identified several likely causes:

  • Electrolysis (stray current corrosion)

  • Galvanic corrosion

  • Cavitation caused by restricted water flow

  • Debris erosion

  • Less likely, excessive heat damage

The dark discoloration around the holes strongly suggested electrical corrosion rather than ordinary rust or normal wear.

What Is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis (also called stray current corrosion) occurs when electrical current leaks into seawater instead of remaining inside the boat's wiring.

Once stainless steel becomes part of that electrical path, it literally begins sacrificing itself.

The result can be:

  • Black staining

  • Deep pitting

  • Rapid metal loss

  • Burn-through holes like those shown in the customer's basket

Unlike normal corrosion, electrolysis can destroy stainless steel in weeks instead of years.

AI Recommended Testing the Boat

Rather than simply replacing the basket again, the AI recommended testing the vessel for stray current.

Using a quality digital multimeter, boat owners can measure for unwanted DC and AC voltage between the bonding system and the surrounding seawater.

If abnormal voltage is present, the electrical problem should be corrected before installing another stainless basket.

Otherwise, the replacement basket may fail just as quickly.

What We Did for the Customer

Even though we believed the damage was caused by conditions aboard the vessel, we wanted to help.

We sent the customer a polypropylene replacement basket at no charge.

Unlike stainless steel, polypropylene is non-conductive and is not affected by electrolysis.
